On Dec. 23rd I made the 1 1/2 hour drive to Globe Arizona for a special Holiday Event at Besh Ba Gowah Indian Ruins. The event only started a few years ago with 30 luminaries placed around the ruin. This year there were more than 1600 luminaries!

I made it to Globe with plenty of daylight left so I wandered around looking to shoot some of the old buildings.

This bar has been around for a long time and later that night I contributed to the establishment. :D

Some very old buildings

Around 5pm I headed over to the ruin to get an idea of what was ahead of me.

A small ladder-

It was getting cold so a fire was started

The moon began to rise just as the sun was setting

Lots of Luminaries

Besides hot cocoa and apple cider there was also a performance by the local Apache Indians

I could have stayed for several hours but a friend was ready to call it quits. Okay - just one more shot!

On the way home I couldn't resist stopping to get some moonlight shots of some Saguaro Cactus. These are both painted with light as well.

Thank you, Aaron. Lovely images of a tradition I wasn't aware of. Beautiful luminaries - are they filled with lights or actually with candles - amazing amount of work for a very beautiful reward.

    Thanks Ann

There are actually candles in each and every bag. There were about 30 people going around lighting all of them.

I wasn't aware of this until a few weeks ago and made sure not to miss it. mwink.gif

Thanks Craig- it was a great night.

The crowd was a pain at times (always walking into the frame) but I could have stayed for several hours. Think I will next year. deal.gif

Beautiful, amazing photos. If you hadn't mentioned a crowd, I would have guessed the place was deserted! 10,11,12 are my favorites.

I really like the b/w conversion on the first one, but my favorite of all of these great shots has to be the one with the fire in the foreground and the ruins in the background. Love that one.

I'll have to make a note to look for this event in 2008 - looks like something not to be missed. Thanks for the preview!

    Thanks Hamster-

There was about 150 people wandering around the site and walking right through my frame. If you look closely at the left window in #11 and above the wall on the left side you can see the motion blur of people.

At about 9pm when all the performances were done people started to clear out.

Thanks Stirfry. That shot caught a lot of peoples attention when I was taking it since I was lying in the dirt about a 1 foot behind the fire. :D Heard a lot of funny comments.

I hadn't heard of it until this year and was glad I made it out there. Are you in AZ?

    Very cool series, Aaron! thumb.gif

Globe looks like a pretty funky place and is now officially on my list of place to see. nod.gif The luminaries shots are awesome.

Good job on the illuminated saguaros too. Very creative.

    Cheers,

As always, incredible and great eye. I like the fire pit shot as well. I'm 6'-5" and being that low to the ground I generate comments too. I added the event to my calendar for next year. Thanks for posting!thumb.gif

I have put it on my travel plan in january Aaron. Thank you so much for sharing. I will not have the luminaries, but the place in its own should be interesting enough!
