SmugMug Prints from a Mac

A friend and fellow smugmugger was telling me about a problem that he just had with getting prints made from his Mac. He selected "true color" and the prints came back much darker than they were on his screen. He said that after time on the phone with customer support he found that the Mac gamma is quite different than the windows gamma or something like that.
I am about to sink a lot of money into a mac pro with the 30" monitor. My question is this.
Will I need to buy a calibration unit for my new monitor?
If I just select auto color on prints, will that help?
I need some help from someone out there who knows. I make 100% of my photography income from SmugMug prints and need them to continue to look spectacular.
Thanks
Brad

This will explain things:

Read that - and holler with questions after you're done, okay?
I can advise you to auto/true after you show me some photos you've processed, okay?
