If I sign up for the pro level smug mug account -- recreate my current website under my current name (i own the domain name) -- will I still need to pay my web hosting company -- lunar pages -- or will smug mug handle it all for me?

You pay SmugMug to host your site and hold the content. (149USD/yr)
You pay your registrar to retain your domain name. (.50 - 20USD/yr)

Yes, you will pay lunar pages the yearly domain registration fee.
No, you will not pay lunar pages the yearly "web hosting" fee. You will want to cancel any "web hosting" package you have with them.

wow. I am such a dweeb. I have been paying for both my domain and hosting service to years...like at and extra $100.00 a month and never stopped my hosting service. I do have a question. what about my emails? How does that work. Also, I have had people on "both" sides help me and no one told me that I did not need my web hosting service anymore...sigh.

SmugMug does not provide an email address so that is something you would have to get from the domain host if you want to use that option.

You may consider Zoho mail - which offers free email service connected to your domain - for free and without adds.
