Photoshop advice appreciated =)

I've got this picture.. It is somewhat out of focus..
and even after expending quite some time.. I still can't get it to be focused.
The original is like this:
The processed version is like this:
Now, I gotta say I'm really a newbie at photoshop. In fact I know nothing until a few days ago, so all expert advice welcome! (Not so expert advice welcome too!)
The more I work on this picture.. the more I come to realise that while this image might actually be best with a soft focus effect, but it does seem like camera blur and soft focus are really different things
I do know that a tripod should have been used, etc etc, but I wasn't the original photographer.. so, what can I say?

And you might want to post smaller size piccies, those are kinda big. We shoot for 800 pixels on the longest side.
