Bought a Nikon D40 last night so decided to get out into my backgarden to try and get used to it (First SLR camera!) I was about to head inside again before the rain started when I seen this little guy on the wall..at first I thought he was a stick until I had a closer look! I've resized the pictures as they were 1.4MB so a bit smaller!

C&C would be great! :)

Took me a minute to catch on to what you meant by that :uhoh: hahaha.

I'm looking at it and see that the DOF is quite small and seems to be somewhat random, is there anyway to change that at all?

We love our slugs here in the Northwest. My favorite is the huge Banana Slug, which some fondly refer to as 'Foster'.

I really like the contrasting green of the lichen or moss he is munching on.

Why do they call it Foster? Yea I love my high contrasts in pictures, maybe a bit too much though mwink.gif

I was looking very closely at him while taking the pictures and noticed some little white insects crawling over him. Any idea of what these are? You can sort of see them in the first picture I posted about half way up his body and here's another picture where they are half way up his body and on his head too.

They call him Foster after the popular desert, 'Bananas Foster', and you will find Foster as a cute stuffed toy in many of the tousisty shops around the Olympic Peninsula, where the Banana slug abounds.

The bugs are most likely a parasite, or some organism that lives symbiotically with the slug.

    Interesting slug Jim!

Banana slugs were particularly popular in Santa Cruz, California where UCSC's mascot is one.

Don't mean to hijack your thread Jim, but here's a shot of one from when I used to live in Santa Cruz:

Couple more shots of them here .

Jim, if you'd prefer I didn't add these shots to your thread, please let me know and I'll happily remove them.

Amazing picture, we don't have colorful slugs here in Northern Ireland, just the old dull grey and brown..a bit like our weather! hehe.

Post away Neil, I don't mind at all! I would like to know how you got the slug fully focused unlike mine, I'm a beginner at SLR here headscratch.gif

Thanks Jim and Chris. Here's another just to give an idea of how big these guys are - they're not called banana slugs just because of their colour. :)

    slug_beside_dollar.jpg

As for focus, these were taken (I think) with my old Nikon CP 995 p&s. Relatively easy to get stuff in focus with that never-ending depth of field (although I must admit the above image disproves that a bit).

For a SLR, just make sure you know the minimum focussing distance of your lens and don't go inside that. If you think you're going to do a lot of this type of macro photography, then you might want to consider a dedicated macro lens or a set of extension tubes.

I don't do much macro stuff and don't have the gear to do so, but I'm sure the helpful folks on the macro forum would be glad to give you a ton of advice.

    Regards,
    Neil
