How is disk space used calculated?

Here's why I ask. First off, my smugmug account is strictly a vanity thing -- I find my talent and vanity are inversely related.
However, I recently came to the epiphany that photos that weren't enhancing my site were making it worse. So I started on the great culling expedition with one mantra in mind: if I don't love it, I'm not keeping it.
So I culled about 100 photos, maybe more from my site. Previous disk space usage was listed at 1.59 GB.
It now says that I have 1084 pictures uploaded, and my disk space usage is 60.84 MB. :huh:huh:huh:huh:huh
I don't think I lost anything, but I am kind of confused about how the numbers jumped around like that ...

In my control panel, it shows that I have used 0 space, but I have thousands of photos posted!
