iTunes....how does it work

Ok..now i have an iTunes account with all my credit card details in it. But i want my daughter to have her stuff separate from my computer (ie her music on her computer)

She rec'd several iTunes cards for xmas & i was under the assumption that because they are prepaid ...she can open her own iTunes account on her PC & put the details in (ie iTunes card number) & download music using that credit but keeps asking her to join with a credit card (she is 14 & does not have this) So i decided to put it on my computer to see what happens & it just swallowed the card up & said 'thanks...you now have some extra credit'

Why cant she open an iTunes account with just an email & use these pre-paid cards without having to input a credit card :dunno

I searched the net & watched the iTunes video (which was as usefull as tits on a bull i might ad) & cant find an answer.

I will try that mate...i think ive already given it a shot but will check it again.

This is rather silly. No company as successful as apple should have a customer ask this question.

I'm pretty sure they require a method of payment associated with the account beyond gift cards. CC or PayPal, I believe.

For my kids, I just put my CC on there, and know that I can trust them. I didn't look into it very far, because that was the easiest thing to do at the time, and I was willing to do it.

Yeah...i was just under the assumption that the iTunes cards you buy at the counter of diff places was to avoid the credit card thing..you know , like pre paid phone cards etc ?

So next question. I downloaded a song for her on my computer...stuck it on a USB drive & took it to her computer & it wont play (i just get lic'ing warning come up) yet on my account it clearly states that i can use the music on 2 computers. How do i get it working on the other computer then ne_nau.gif

What happens when you try to play it? It prompts you for a username and password? Just enter your UN/PW that you used when you bought the music, and it will play just fine. It's a one-time thing. After that, anything bought on your computer will play fine on hers.

I try to play it on her computer & i get nothing but a pop up screen ' this music is lic'd to another computer' ......or words to that effect.

Yes, you need to authorize her computer. You can authorize up to five computers. There is also an option of buying the bit more expensive music, that you can play on all computers. It comes without a certain security chip...
Don't ask me for technical details, I don't have them.

It's called iTunes Plus, and most of the publishers haven't allowed Apple to sell DRM (Digital Rights Management) free music. But get it when you can, I think. The quality is better, and there are no restrictions on copying.

It lives under the store pane in itunes. You have to authorize her computer with your password and username if I am not mistaken.

I agree but... for some reason every kid under about 20 years old seems to have no problem at all figuring this stuff out!

Being well beyond 20 years old, and having recently purchased an ipod, I had to laugh at how long it took me to figure out the whole itunes to ipod deal (and I'm still not as up to speed as I would like to be). So rest assured, Gus, it's not just you! :D

I know you can down load iTunes w/o a c/c 'cause we just did it with our sons. They both got iTunes cards for Christmas as well and my DH refused to put a c/c # for something that has already been paid for. Well - I can't tell you how, but they got it to work (I'll check if you need me to).

Our issue was w/ the fact that supposedly these songs only play on Apple devices (outside of your computer) - surprisingly, neither of my boys (11 and 14) knew that. I believe there are work arounds, but we're still working that out.

    good luck,

    C.

That's the one thing I hate about MP3 players is they all hafta use a program to keep track of your music.
    iTunes....Windows media or the like.
None of em are super user friendly.

I went with a Palm TX instead of a MP3 player.
Cost about the same and does MUCH more.
Batt life is GREAT...does Music...Video....Show your pics....keep appointments and MUCH more.
Has a LARGE screen to view Pics and Video with.
A 2GB Ultra SD holds more than a enough music for me and all I hafta use to load my music is the Palm Quick Install program.
    No muss....no fuss. :D

Im just talking about getting the music off the iTunes site without a credit card by using a pre-purchased card. Nothing about the format/platforms/players etc.

This is why I don't buy music through iTunes, though I love the software itself, my Mac, and my iPod. I buy only CD's, then I rip them into iTunes. I just don't want the hassle of DRM, nor do I trust that I'll always be able to play my music when I want to. Music publisher's don't want to sell DRM-free music, I don't get their attitude. Every CD they sell is DRM-free. :D

ok - I tried like you did above, using the 'redeem' button and then tried to set up an account. Kept getting the page asking for c/c info - but my son swore that there was a "none" button to select if you were using gift cards.

So I finally found the following (below) and even though it seemed like I did all that before, it worked. It was weird - my initial try, I got the c/c select options along the top (and no "none" button). Using essentially the same method, I thought, I got a different screen w/ the select c/c along the bottom of the screen and there was the "none" option.

before you attempt to redeem her gift cards, you do have to make sure that you log yourself out and set up a new acct w/ a different email for her. I just created a yahoo accout different than the one I use (not that I'll ever use it...) for my other son.

but, in the end, it worked...

    hth's and good luck,

    C.

iTunes Store: How to redeem an iTunes Gift Card
I do not have an iTunes Store account
    1. Install the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes (it's free) from the Download iTunes webpage. If iTunes is already installed on your computer, check your version and update if necessary.
    2. Open iTunes.
    3. In the Source pane (on the left side of the iTunes window), click iTunes Store.
    4. In the upper-right corner of the iTunes Store window, verify that the button says "Sign In." If this button displays an email address instead, click the button and then click Sign Out.
    5. In the QUICK LINKS window in the right-hand column, click Redeem.
    6. In the resulting screen, enter the 16-digit code printed on the back of the card (it starts with an "X"), then click Redeem. 301958_1.jpg
    7. In the resulting screen, create your new iTunes Store account. You will have the option to enter credit card information; if you do not wish to do so, click the None button on the Payment screen.
    8. Once you've successfully redeemed your gift card, the credit amount will appear next to your account name in the upper-right corner. Each time you purchase items, iTunes will deduct funds from the credit until it's depleted. If a pending purchase exceeds the credit amount, iTunes will ask you to enter a credit card number. You do not need to re-enter your gift card number to make multiple purchases.
