Welcome to d/grin ethel. The photo is quite flat. It has nothing to hold its ground with...not colour/perspective/shadow/subject. Get any of these things right & it can work.

With an animal i would almost always use the eyes. Thats what we & they themselves look at first. I would try it again with the sun behind you on the widest avail view & photography up over there muzzles ..showing the carrot being shared but get the eyes & maybe the forelock in the photo.

My 2 bob's worth anyway. Goodluck.

Welcome to Dgrin Ethel, I'm a bit of a newbie myself - I'm sure you'll find plenty of help here :D
I like the second image better, it has much better lighting and more 'pop'. I like the shot, however I'm struggling with connections to the theme... although I suppose it could be tied in as 'action'. It just doesnt scream it out to me. just my 2c.. all the best!

I'm not sure I agree with Gus' take on your first one, as for me, I go by the concept that with a horse, any angle at any time in any place will do... BUT, I ask you to look at it again and ask yourself it if conveys either of thoughts or actions to YOU.

Ask the same with the 2nd one, which will relate to others, I believe, but with that one, I think you should crop our some of the space on the left, just my opinion...

    Welcome to dgrin, ethel!

I like the thoughtfulness idea of #1, but like others would like to see their eyes. Maybe the noses alone would work if the crop were different? It's a little too boxy imo.
