Fodor or Lonely Planet?

I have used Lonely Planet's guide books for Thailand and Ireland and thought they were pretty good. But as I looked on books on Scotland, i looked at both Fodor's and Lonely Planet's.

I don't rely on the guide books, mearly reading it to get a general glimpse of what I want to see.

But which one is better? Lonely Planet's looks thinner than Fodor's ... committing the worst sin of a book buyer... Judging a book by it's cover or width!

In general, Fodor's has never been my speed, and the Lonely Planet book I bought for Vienna last year was really good. In fact, the only series I liked better was Rick Steve's. You might look at the Rick Steves Great Britian Guidebook (unfortunately, he doesn't have one for Scotland). Best is usually to flip through a couple in the bookstore though before buying. Thickness doesn't help with carrying it with you, and if the extra information isn't useful to you...

But that means that is more reading to do during the slow periods! deal.gif

Yeah, I'm just weird. I do week and a half trips with only carry-on luggage, so I pay more attention to weight and size than most people do. But, makes it much easier taking the train and than the metro and walking the rest of your way to the hotel.
