Wordpress thumbnail/gallery plugin

The WP-SmugMug Plugin is very helpful [especially when I limit the # of thumbs by ImageCount= ].
For writing Wordpress photo-journal posts, I need a different plugin, or an efficient way to accomplish:
1. given URL of a specific gallery/photo
2. insert thumbnail image, which is
3. linked to open the gallery, target set to open in a new window
Sure, can all be done by pasting/editing html - I'm just wishing for a workflow that takes about 1 second to do :-)
PS - I use ecto for blogging which I highly recommend.
