Charming - yes. However, it brings one more focal point to the picture (face, book, socks) and this way it loses its somewhat asketish look.

I also have a feeling that I see too much of a "dark matter". I think a tighter crop would benefit to the total impression...
Thanks! I do tend to like a little too much breathing room on the edges of photos. I think it comes from cropping for print rather than the web. I took your advice and cropped it slightly tigher while maintaining the square aspect.

Hmm...but the lower part of the book getting lost in shadow looks kind of odd.

I agree with no socks. I love the socks, and it makes for a great wall-hanger, but I think the theme is stronger without them.
