I was hiking in Okutama (Japan) over New Years, and found this stuff "growing" on the side of the trail. I've never seen it before, but the Japanese people I met were all familar with it so it must be common in that area.

I think it's called "needle ice" in English. Anyone seen anything like this before?

What makes it form like.... that do you know headscratch.gif
Is this a formation only seen in a particular part of the world?

Thanks for sharing Mike ......... Skippy :D

Thanks for the reply Skippy. Here are some references I found online. It's an interesting phenonemon!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needle_ice

    http://www.mwrop.org/W_Needham/NeedleIce_070123.htm

The second link gives the names for needle ice in Swedish, German and Japanese, so it must occur around the world.
