Hey all -

Looking for some advice regarding my 20D. It recently got sent into Canon because it'll take a few shots & then Err 99. This happened with multiple lenses, cards, batteries that all work fine on my 30D - Must have something to do with the camera itself & I'd guess the shutter... it does work for those few shots it'll take before the 99 error, so feels like a shutter deal to me. (Not to mention the fact that that shutter probably has 20-30k on it.)

Here's the trouble: Canon wants $207 to fix it - the estimate just lists the work as "minimum labor charge".

So, given that I could potentially get about $400 out of it, seems like it'd make sense to fix it. It would continue to serve as my backup until I pick up a replacement for the 30D (which would then take the 20's place). At the end of the day I'd get aout $200 from it, plus the value of it as a working backup.

MY QUESTION is, should I OK this work by Canon or are there other options out there for repair?

One crazy idea I had - do the IR Conversion guys know enough to diag & fix these basic problems? Perhaps I could just roll the repair & conversion into one deal.

Another thought - Are there folks out there who are looking for "needs repair" bodies? Perhaps it'd be better to take the entire loss to offset some 2008 income... though then I may be forcing my hand in buying a new body sooner (and I'm kind of trying to time the used 1Ds market...).

Anyway, thanks for anyone's input on this whole matter!

PS - hey mods, feel free to relocate this to the Cameras forum if you feel that's a better fit.
