Running and playing greyhounds

My wife and I have adopted two retired racing greyhounds in the last year, and this past Sunday I took advantage of the nice weather to take some pictures of them running (looking for shots for the last round of LPS). So, without further introduction, here are the shots that I liked best.

The focus is soft on some of these, I know. I'm shooting with an ultrazoom P&S, the speed has a hard time keeping up with dogs running at probably around 30+ MPH.

There are some more pictures in this gallery

C&C are welcome. Thanks for looking.

Great shots. I had a greyhound from the track back in the 90s, what a wonderful dog he was! I am so glad these two have a great home with you and your wife.

Adopted greyhounds are some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. Good for you for giving them a great home. These shots show how hard they can be to pick up on "film." :D

Good for you for adopting these regal hounds! Capturing quick action with a P&S is difficult. I think you handled it about as well as could be expected. My only little bit of advice would be to try make sure the shutter speed is as high as it can go. You may have already done that, but just in case....

Thanks! They are wonderful dogs, and they do love their home. It's wonderful to get home and see their spinning tails.

I continue to be amazed at how wonderful they are. I wasn't a dog person, and after a horrible experience with a roomate's lab, swore that I'd never live with a dog again. Now I have two (and my wife kinda wants a third)... A life changing thing.

Thanks. I was using a 3 shot burst mode to help out, but timing is somewhat of a guess. I probably could have gone for a bit faster of a shutter speed, but I didn't want too wide of an aperture to help keep a larger DOF. And pushing the camera past ISO400 isn't always great. Next time I'll go for the faster shutter speed and see if that helps.

They aren't littermates, but they look similar enough that lots of people think that. They do have a shared ancestor or two if you go back far enough, but it's a name that's very common for the racing greyhounds. I'd have to look it up to remember though.

You have some lovely dogs there.

Dangerous? They say that the only way that a greyhound will hurt a theif is if the theif trips over the sleeping dog. Sure they are big, but you'll have a hard time finding a sweeter breed of dog.
