Are Storyboards cost effective?

Hi All,

Unless I have misunderstood the concept of storyboards I can't find how they are cost effective.

My understanding is a storyboard (for this example) is three 8x10 (obviously can be any size) images printed next to each other on one sheet of paper.

If this is the case I worked out that to print this as above would be $48.10 more expensive than printing 3 individual 8x10 images. Now if you then frame the prints and include matting around the images is it not better to go with the 3 individual images over the larger single print?

Am I confused?

Cheers,
W00DY

I can't tell you anything about story boards, but I can get a 20 X 30 print at my door for $15.00.

From what I know, storyboards can be a lot of things, even 16 square pics set onto a 20x20 background. A 20x20 lustre print from Smug costs $23.99, but you can charge MUCH more for it, as it takes some time to put it together and it's a specialty item. Another option would be to use a 10x20 print size ($12.95) and put three prints across that. I'd like to add them to my choices as I think they are appealing and can make a nice print profit for you, especially when you have some templates established and it doesn't take too much for you to put them together.

I don't use Smugmug for my prints as I am in Australia and need to be able to get the prints faster. I use a Pro Lab here in Sydney and for a 14 x 30 print (three 8x10 images with 1'' between them and 2'' around the edges) it costs $51.03.

To get three 8x10 prints it costs $7.38

My question is what is the benefit of printing all three images on the one page rather than just three separate images and then getting a matt put around them when framed, isn't this pretty much the same result?

I have a feeling I am confused about these but can't seem to get the answer?

Well, in that situation, it sounds better to do the frame and matte. Are there other print sizes available that don't cost 50+ that you could work with? I mean, I wouldn't feel stuck to the 8x10 size, unless someone has specifically requested that. I think of a story board as having a group or arrangement of smaller pics set onto a larger format. Any larger size photo print that is available to you for a reasonable price could be broken down into smaller pieces and made into a custom storyboard.

They are for me. I charge the regular print price + $15. I should charge more, but since most clients only order 1 and I have Fotofusion (makes it SUPER easy to make them), I am happy with where I stand. I order them mounted on styrene.
