Looks a bit oversaturated if I may say so. I follow your thinking path though.
It does make a difference for shots like this if you use spot metering or matrix... If you spot meter, the bird would probably be black, if you meter on the light spots. You would get a silhouette shot.
Matrix might be trickier, as there seems to be a big range between highlights and shadow. There are only so much stops one can successfully control.
