    By the way Elaine....
The 70-200mm f/4L IS meshes quite nicely with your 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens for general walk-around shooting occasions.

I will often use three bodies with three lenses: 12-24mm f/4 Tokina, 24-70mm f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/4L IS. However, although I get a unbroken focal range from 12-200mm with wonderful IQ and get IS capability in the important 70-200mm range, this is a heavy load.

I have recently played with using the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens in conjunction with the 70-200mm f/4L IS. The combination works just fine! Although I sometimes miss the 12-17mm focal range; I can usually guess whether or not I need that range (in that case I will carry a third camera with the Tokina). However, for most shooting situations I can do very well with the 17-55mm and 70-200mm lenses and I don't seem to miss the 55-70mm range very much.

Of course, the added bonus is that I have IS on both lenses. The 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens is a pretty darn nice low light lens as well as being a great general purpose lens.

    Tamrons new 70-200 f2.8
I know you said you are wanting IS. But I thought I would point out that Tamron is just now releasing a 70-200 f2.8 for $700. Its already listed at Adorama
    http://www.adorama.com/TM70200EOS.html

There are no reviews yet, but it is supposed to be fairly light compared to others and has a minimal focus distance of about 37 in. It also has BIM (Built In Motor) for the Nikon D40 folks. It is a Di lens, so it has the digital lens coatings, but is not a DiII lens and therefore it is ready for the full frame sensors when you jump to that.
