The D3 sucks
Hi Y'all,
The big day arrived yesterday when my D3 arrived. :barb I knew there was a problem when I first held the camera. Nothing felt different. For $5K you should feel something, anything, Right?
I headed down to the wetlands to try it out. I gotta tell you it was a disappointment.
For $5K I it shouldn't had blown the white in the eagle's head. Sure I could have adjusted the EV. But if I have to do all that photographic stuff what is the camera doing?
I still got butt shots
and worst of all the focusing, look at this :huh
sure I had forgot that I had the focus set to single shot and not servo but if the camera can't stop me from doing stupid stuff what am I paying for?
I did get a few decent shots, but I had to set the exposure and do all that stuff I was doing on my cheaper cameras.
Now here's a shot I would have never gotten before. As I was leaving I ran into an otter chowing down on an eel. The problem was that he was completely backlit. The sun was directly behind the otter. I could not make out any details with my eyes. However since I had never seen an otter with it's catch before I took some shots at ISO 3200 and ev adjustments of +1.0 and .07.
I guess I will just have to live with the camera's shortcomings.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Congrats Harry
My Gallery
I was wondering with the mention in this post:
http://dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=722724&postcount=16
... if I had missed an announcement?
Congratulations and I bet you "adapt" to this new camera in no time at all. clap
How soon till you get the AF-S Nikkor 600mm, f4D ED-IF II? (... or did I miss another announcement?

Hey Z man,
I don't usually announce "my D whatever came or new lens came". I try to use it first and have something besides the arrival to talk about.
The 600mm would be too expensive for me. The lens costs $9500 and the divorce would run a few hundred K.

I went to the wetland-ish area here a few weeks ago but there were no animals. Well, on the way back to the truck I saw a coyote but I was too beat and disapointed and had alredy put all my gear away :cry
I hope in the spring there are some creatures (or at least large birds) out to photo. Summer is too hot here to go out of the house.
For that price you could get a Canon 600/4IS AND a 1DMkIII
And with the direct print button (that Nikon mistakenly left off) you could print those butt shots all the quicker.
Of course with the Canon they'd probably be OOF:D
Congrats on the camera. If I had the money I'd have one too.

I had the misfortune of attending a convention in Vegas in August a few years back. The temp when I got off the plane was 116 degrees. :wow Its no picnic here in Florida during the summer either.

"There's no reason to hurry on this climb...as long as you keep the tempo at the right speed the riders will fall back."
Wow! And you got away with calling the Finder of Paths, uh, old? With no rebuttal?
Congrats Harry on your new toy in the New Year!

Having owned the D100, D2H, D2Hs, D2X, D200, D300 and now the D3 anyone saying that I won't listen to Nikon marketing again has to be smoking something very strong. :ivar

I see you are a man of many great cameras. If you could only have one, which would it be?

While its still early in the Game I have to go with the D3. The handling is about perfect, fast AF, high ISO, and great IQ.
The D2H will always be a favorite because of its handling and fast AF.

If Harry only showed the first three images, I would suspect he made a bad deal. His first three shots remind me of my bird experiences. Seeing the shots where he became involved revealed not only the advantage of the new sensor and beautiful glass, but also showed us Harry knows his business.
Good shooting Harry - enjoy your new equipment. I'm sure it will soon be looked at as a beautiful blessing. Someday I hope to be able to get some nice bird shots, but I'm beginning to suspect I can not afford it! :cry

Tempting but If I did that my poor ole D300 would have no lenses to play with it.
I was careful to respond to him around 9 PM which is after his bedtime. :ivar
Thank you

Hey none of that stuff around here. You were right when you said its the photographer not the camera. I took really good shots with my ole D100 and some of my favorite all-time shots were with the Sony 707 & 717. I have also demonstrated my ability to take very crappy very shots with very expensive equipment.
If you want to get nice bird shots you don't need expensive equipment but you will have to invest time and effort. I had to take tens of thousands of shots & take workshops from professionals before I started to get shots I was satisfied with.
Thanks for the kind words.
