My goof up

Yesterday, I drop the kid off at school and head down to the park.

Camera check , 200mm check ,iso check , Camera settings,Check. Okay good to go... What's that in the field,a coyote hunting gophers? Yup, I jump out of the car and start shooting. He' s close, he is jumping he looks my way, all the time I am merrilly clicking away. Now time for a quick chimp... "No CF card" ????
what .. then suddenly the vision of my cf card in the card reader at my computer flashes across my mind. DOH!!!!!:clap :clap :clap way to go idiot .:rofl

So not much to show for my efforts yesterday. I did get a long shot of a pheasant thats been tormenting me.



and of course a magpie which I am practicing trying to get better detail on the black head. Still shooting JPG





I am not sure but I think he might be a goose stepping Nazi.:dunno




And a closer view I should have tried fill flash! another goof up.


Oh well , I keep learning:D .

The detail is there. It's just a matter of some fine tuning to bring out the darker areas.

As to being able to work the camera without the CF card - I don't know if the Rebel has Custom Function settings or not. If it does you should be able to use it to set the camera so the shutter doesn't function without the card. On the 10D, the CFn for the shutter release without the CF card is Fn#2. If you have Custom Function settings, it would be worth the look-see to check if you can disable the shutter function without the CF card.

Thanks Waxy , I zipped back home and grabbed my card and sped back but alas my quary had left:cry. The magpie was a consolation I guess. One of these days I will get the little buggers and everthing will go my way(maniacal laugh coming) mmmwahhahaaa mmmwhaaaaaa.

Nice shot of a pheasant Shakey. The tend to be very relcutant to hang around when you start looking at them.

I did get a few frames from a distance of a pheasant's butt in New Mexico, but thought I 'd leave the butt pictures unposted.:D Altho Harry says that is a growing specialty in bird photgraphy.

I guess you're going to have to add "Check for CF card" to your pre-shoot checklist. As Dixie mentions, there is a way to disable this, so that the camera will let you know quickly (by not releasing the shutter) that something is amiss. Depending on which camera you have, this setting may even be in the main menu.

Still, you got a nice pheasant shot and the magpie is really nice too Those pheasants are tough. I was out shooting with someone yesterday (to be posted later) and we were talking about how tough it was to get near the male, who resides where we often shoot. They are so shy, but sooooooooo colorful and detailed. I've always dreamed of nailing one in-flight Oh well, I guess this gives us a reason to keep going back. We just know that one of these days were gonna get that "Great" shot.......lol

You know, of course Tim, that this is the kind of story you don't tell the public. We've all done it, just not admitted that we've done it!!

I did that once and decided to make this little holder for an extra CF card that I always keep attached to my camera strap.

No problem - Dry runs are a common and necessary - even Astronuts practice it

Keep your eye out and your camera locked and loaded, the coyote will be back.

I think Dixie did a good job of bringing out the details in the bird, which means you had captured it properly
