I got a Canon Rebel XT my very first DSLR camera. This is my first shot. Keep in mind I have no photography experience other than a point and shoot. comments and tips are appreciated. I know the lighting stinks.

    Hi Shannon,

Nice cat. I had one that looked very similar. I think the main problem with this shot is that the white balance is wrong. The yellow cast comes from incandescent lighting. This can be fixed in post-processing in a number of ways. It's easiest if you are shooting in RAW (just use the eye-dropper to set the white point somewhere in the fur). If not, then there are a number of ways...curves, blue photo filter, color balance. Your XT also has a white balance setting that you could use next time to compensate for the lighting (just set it to tungsten).

DSLRs are a lot more complicated than P&S cameras, but it's just a matter of practice and asking the right questions to get the results you want. Hang in there.

    Cheers,
