Got my new Canon 40D out, my 17-40/4L (which almost isn't wide enough now!), a 3-stop neutral density filter, and my home-built rig. I was pretty happy with this picture, though I still have a small issue with rig stability. 1/2 second shutter.

Ditto! Any pics of the rig? Was the engine running or did you push the car?

No pics of the rig. I drove in circles in a cul de sac near my house at about 4mph. It was a solo act, though pushing the car might have been a bit smoother. I really need to get a second boom to help stabilize the primary boom.

The setup is three 6.5" suction cups, in a row, holding up an 8' long section of 1x1 square aluminum tubing. The camera is mounted UNDERNEATH the boom. This way the boom obstructs sky, not car, and makes cloning easier.

Basically there are two ways to do it. A rig attached to the car (and some rigs get very elaborate). Or car-to-car (the photographer in a second car, both cars pacing each other).

Nice ambiance & angle bill. Im not far away with one for my bike. This city is full of tunnels & their surface is glass smooth & i think that lighting over a time exposure would look great.

If i suddenly stop posting...you will know it had teething problems.

One thing I learned in this shoot is that a 40D, in continuous mode, will not re-evaluate an expsoure inbetween shots. I had it set on low-speed burst mode and used a remote trigger cable in the always-on position. As I drove in circles I went from sunny side the shadow side to sunny side, etc. Each shot needed an exposure correction, some as much as two stops.

Any setting in a 40D to change this? My only other recourse is to run the shutter release cable into the car's cockpit (I built an extension wire to allow me to do this).

I think that's just the way continuous mode works. ne_nau.gif The extension wire is a good idea, but you might want to look into a wireless release. The Phottix one on eBay is about $16. I have a set of PocketWizards which will do the job, too. wings.gif

Sounds like a good deal. Never done much on eBay before, and didn't know that there were retailers who sold through eBay. Very odd to me. :shrug Think I'll pick one up.
