Great photos! I plan on shooting some high school hockey pretty soon. Any tips? I am also wondering where you were able to take those from. The rink that is local to me has nets around the whole thing unless you are practically on the bench.

    The hockey game was shot using a d300, d3, 200-400vr, 70-200vr, ISO 3200
both lens shot wide open. Custom WB from Ice.

This rink has excellent lighting, it runs at about 4000k. The lights are professional Gas.

I am working ,shooting from Player bench, no glass.

The team in White is undeafeated, they won the game 6-0

Thanks for all the nice comments, these photos are straight from the camera, no cropping, just some levels for contrast.

    Hey Matt!

Hockey is demanding, it's fast, difficult angles, usually bad lights etc.

I try to follow the action on the Puck and anticipate, what will happen.
In choosing your gear, a fast zoom is probably a neccesity 2.8 for shutter speed. Iso as high as you feel comfortable for good results, my photos are all at 3200. You need nail the exposure and shoot tight. Shutter speeds need to stay around 1/400 minimum.
When shooting at professional arenas, They are strobbed and make everything easier, however in hockey where shooting bursts helps to get the shot, sometimes the strobes are a hindrance, because with them you are limited to one shot. Anticipate, knowledge of the game, patience. Pick your spots.

Thankyou, that is a nice one. The poor goalie he was being bombarded.
There are many more shots even better, just no time to post.

Will try to get some from the D3 up later today, they are awesome.

    CBHL, yes USA hockey.
We shoot them almost every week.
There are teams from about 8 years to high school.

no fighting here, the rules are very specific

there is contact, but no boarding, no smashing, etc.

the kids just skate and play hard.
