Well folks....been playing tonight and came up with this version of the iris. I don't know if I like this one or the color version better.... (click for EXIF)
tanna, i like this one but i like the color much more. nt only do i think it fits the challenge better but i think the color adds a demention that the black and white is missing. usually b/w adds something a depth if you will to a shot, but i think it detracts from this one.

I can only hope to progress to the point of one day being a second rate photographer, wish me luck.
I think I like the color one better, although I do like the white background of this one. Maybe you could combine the two: color iris over a white background. Or would that look too much like an eyeball?
I agree I liked the colors better. But I like this one too, but I have a tendancy to make 100 different versions of things and call it a "study", that's only because I am extremely indecisive! I think I prefer the color on black better though. I feel that the black drew you to the colour and made it stand out even more.
My painting teacher once told me that white on black stood out more than black on white.

thanks all of you! yeah, I started putting it on a white background the 1st go around and it looked too much like an eyeball.....plus, the color is more striking against the black.
I appreciate the feedback.....unless I come up with something better I at least have something for the challenge!

just to be contrare.. I like the black and white..I like the color one too and obviously that appeal to most but I do like the black and white.. it's very..... minimal and it kept me gazing at those strange textures in it...

now don't you start makin' this difficult on me!
If I had a very good lens I could really show off some textures.....I mean, have you ever stared into someone's eye before? irises are like thumbprints, no 2 are alike, and so diverse in colors and depth. some even have varying layers of muscle for constriction.
my own irises have a very delineated line between the outer edge of the iris and the edge of the pupil. I'm thinking about setting up a special lighting device for this purpose.....I think it'd be really cool to have a gallery of all my friends.
I should stock up on visine and cookies (visine for comfort, cookies to lure them in) :lol4
I think that both are striking... The color is perfect as it is, but I agree with Lynn that this version keeps me staring at it longer. They are completely different. Thought I'd just help muddy things up for you...

Go with the first one I say.
