The 500mm f/4.0L IS has me taking bird shots I never thought about. Here is a guy from the northern edge of Tokyo bay. Anyone ID him?

ISO 400 , f/5.0 , 1/400 , 500mm

Sorry I can't ID him either all my books are for Florida or the US. Good capture though. The colors look great and the detail in the shot is excellent. Shame that one branch was over the face a bit.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

The colors are similar to a jay so I thumbed through my North American
guide and don't see anything except the Island Scrub Jay that's even close.
Even then, the head is wrong. Maybe it's in the right direction though.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

It is an Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyana).

You're both welcome. The references are so big you have to narrow the search. For this one, I enter Japan and came up with a bunch of pages and luckily he was on the third page I checked if I remember correctly.

Their photos are the best, but at least you have a decent chance of being able to ID a bird if you at least know where the photo was taken.
