The question is, I have a Canon 400D and I am looking at getting either a Sigma APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG OS or if I can push the funds far enough the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. Now are either of these two lense to much for a Canon 400D??
What do you think.

pssst.... buy the canon.
The short answer is no.
The long answer is with the Canon USM lens their internal motors are designed to focus the internal elements of that lens as fast as the cameras AF sensors gives them the distance data to focus at. The camera isn't doing any extra effort to focus a 10mm F4L lens then it is focusing a 600 F4L with 1.4x teleconverter. All the focus motors are in the lens with Canon lens which is why I believe their AF system is the best and fastest.

I use a 70-200 2.8 w/ my D50 all the time and it provides wonderful results. I know these aren't the same types of glass but you get the idea:D
My 80-400 worked beautifully on my 400D (until I sold the 400D for the 40D) and now works equally well (or better) on the 40D. Either lens should serve you very well, now and on future bodies.
