Woodpeckers

I was out in a an area that is slowly being overtaken by developers. :cry There is a relatively small area by a pond that has a nice wooded area. Hopefully the developers will at least keep this area for those that build houses here but you never know. Anyhow, I go there and bird the area off and on; especially in the winter months. It is sometimes dead, but other times, quite active. Yesterday, 4 red bellied woodpeckers were battling it out probably over territory. Here are some images.

They were moving around constantly waiting for the next attack or they, themselves, went on the offensive.

Here are two I caught together.

Also, in the same thicket I observed downy woodpeckers and yellow-rumped warblers, carolina chickadees and probably over 100 American Goldfinches! No good pics of those. :cry

OMG well spotted, we have a woodpecker round our way, but I've only heard it, never seen it, let alone got a pic or two.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Good captures Stepehen! thumb.gif Such cool birds. Were they just chasing each other around? Or actually dogfighting?

Nice shots Stephen. Those guys are tough to shoot, they don't stay still for very long. Hope the developer doesn't ruin your local shooting site, not good huh !!

    Well done Stephenclap.gifclap.gifclap.gif
Hopefully the developers are also nature lovers.

Hey! Nice shots..... I like the first one best! A longer focal length or maybe even a tighter crop would've been super cool, just to see a little more detail of the birds themselves!

Nice shots Stephen. I do see the reason for the bickering though. They're all female with the exception of the third shot. :D

(I'll probably pay for that but it's the truth.)

Thanks Harry. I wish they had gotten closer, but no go. Oh well. I am happy with what I got. It was a lifer bird for me so that was neat.

They are. I also love their close cousin, the golden fronted woodpecker. I've seen many of those, but I have not been able to get a good pic of one.

They were just chasing each other around and yelling at each other. Thanks for the comments.

The building has just been stagnant as of late. It was private land at one time. I hope that the developers at least create a park for the subdivision and keep the huge trees around this small lake. Thanks for the comments.
