A rare schmoo sighting

It doesn't happen often.
In fact, many experienced schmoo hunters have gone years without catching as many full faced shots.
I was able to get 3 "keepers". I'm not so happy with the skin-tones in "Smirk" and I'm still VERY new to shooting people, so any and all C&C would be appreciated!
Thanks for looking.

Travel = good. Woo, shooting!

Hmmm thanks, sweetness! Next time I'll lip synch to some Finnish pop music for ya.
I was trying not to run and hide. The general knee-jerk reaction to seeing a large shiny lens aimed my way. We'll see our Nick again soon, don't worry!

i too like the lighting of your subject and the lovely blue backround; however, I do feel like your subject is much too far to the right of the frame.. and I'm definitely one for different compositions; it's just a tad too much for my liking.
-Marilyn Monroe
I'm not sure why, but on the 2nd I'd almost prefer her other eye be more in focus than the eye towards the right edge. Maybe just because of the composition, I don't know.
I like the blue background, and I really dig the composition (far right) of all three (mostly the 1st and 3rd). I have issues taking pictures of people with glasses; I think you mastered the skill well in these shots.
Whew, I was worried I'd left those unlocked
Maybe she's just on the verge of killing me
And it was chilly, but not that bad, we were still in MD when I took these.
Just nice late-afternoon sunlight in the back yard. We had a recent snow and I was using the shadowed snow as a backdrop for most of these.
The sun did the hard work, I just found it
I hadn't noticed that all of these ended up being to the right. I had several other compositions, but I didn't like the way any of those came out. In going back through a lot of my people shots, I found I tend to always put the subject in the lower right corner. Thanks for pointing it out!
As I said to Ian, the blue was just the snow in the shadows of late-afternoon light. I really liked the way it looked too, thanks!
As for the glasses, that was one of the things that I had a lot of trouble with. I took 75 shots, and had 3 keepers, so I wouldn't say "mastered" but thank you!

Was it all natural lighting? really great shots!
...but what I can't believe is that she let you get 75 shots!!!

All good pictures! But that last one is just amazing The expression is priceless!
Canon EOS 30D, Canon 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, Tokina 12-24 f/4. Sigma 1.4 TC, Feisol 3401 Tripod + Feisol ballhead, Metz 58 AF-1 C, ebay triggers.
Yup, all natural light, just the late afternoon sun
And yup! 75!!! I blame the new haircut.
I think the last one is great. However, checking the cmyk in PS, I see that it has no cyan at all in the flesh. So, I’m guessing that if you shot RAW, then in the white balance in ACR, you had the option of going warmer which warms the flesh too much, or going colder which makes the background too blue. My suggestion would be to get the flesh right in ACR, then fix the background in post.
The short lighting works great for her face. (Short lighting is having the light come from the side where you don’t see the ear. It would be broad lighting if the light were coming from the right.)
I’d also crop the right edge so the background doesn’t peak out there. I love the composition, and the contrast of the complimentary colors (yellow/blue) is excellent. I think it’s a wonderful portrait.

Hey, forgive me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like you guys are a couple? :D

Jim,
Thanks for this review! I really appreciate it. I felt that I had her skin tone all wrong in that shot, but didn't know how to fix it.
I had the wrong WB set when I took that shot, and cooled it down in ACR trying for a decent balance between the BG and her face, however this left a lot of red in her skin tone. After doing my usual PP her face was REALLY red. I'm not familiar with working in CMYK, I do all of my work in RGB. I pulled down the reds in her face, but didn't notice a lack of blue (due to inexperience here). I know that Blue isn't the same as Cyan, but I think it's a place to start! Thanks so much for the pointer.
Also, yes, she's my better half <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/iloveyou.gif" border="0" alt="" >
I see. That explains why she wants to kill you. :D:D
