Custom hostname problems!

MarloweMarlowe Registered Users Posts: 219 Major grins
Hi, I'm having a real problem getting my custom hostname to show in place of my Smugmug address. www.cyclingphotos.ca does lead to http://www.cxphotos.smugmug.com/ but won't show my custom url.

I've set up the cname at Netfirms.com and this is what I'm shown:
"Sub Domain name updated" and just showed the above domain name and the smugmug forwarding location. It took me 5 days to get this far. On the Smugmug end I STILL get this message in control panel settings:

"Warning: That hostname doesn't resolve to SmugMug. This may cause problems with your custom hostname setting." :huh

I don't think I can figure this one out. Please help??
Jon

    Hi Jon,

I took a look at your domain and it does not appear to be resolving correctly. In the www CNAME field did you put www.smugmug.com or www.cxphotos.smugmug.com? If you put in the later, you will need to change it to www.smugmug.com. I know that it does not make sense to do it that way but it will work.

Also, you will want an @ A record pointed to our IP address - 63.81.134.23

Once you do that, it should work correctly after the updates propagate accross the internet.

if you need more help, give me a shout on the help desk. http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal

    Hi Jon,

It actually seems as if the domain is 'forwarded' to your SmugMug address, something that you do not want to do. See Doc's reply above for the correct settings thumb.gif

You have it set up to forward to your Smugmug site. You don't want to forward to your Smugmug site, instead you need to set up a CNAME record (also known as an alias record) pointing directly to (not forwarded to) www.smugmug.com

Thanks guys, but when I do this I'm getting "invalid subdomain name". Have I completely messed this up yet?

    Hello,

I'm also having an issue getting my hostname to carry throughout my site. I followed the instructions here http://www.smugmug.com/help/godaddy.mg to configure godaddy. My site is www.fluiddesignsphoto.com. You can see that by typing in the address it goes to my smugmug site, however after you click on any link it drops my custom hostname and instead uses the smugmug URL. Is there something that i need to do in additionl to the directions i followed to configure godaddy?

    Thanks,
    Susan

Whenever you change your domain, you need to remember to change the links in your Navbar. The reason your URL keeps changing is that the links are set to use yournickname.smugmug.com

To make them work with both your smugmug.com address and the custom domain, you need to make the links compatible with both.

You can do this by changing the "a href" links in the Navbar.

    for home use /
for all other links to your own site drop the domain part. Here are some examples:

    273329969_PHAFw-M.jpg

If you used the Easy Customizer to set up your Navbar, you need to edit the links there. Make the enter the links as /galleries for example to make the galleries link work.

If you still have trouble let me know and I will help you figure out where the problem is.

Hey, I will keep my question on this same thread since it's related...

I can go to my site www. xxxx .com (that's the format, not my site!), but inevitably it will revert to a domain of xxxx.smugmug.com - how do I keep it as www. xxxx .com as I navigate all of the pages? I think I have everything set up correctly...

    Link to my site!

    From my GoDaddy acct

    A (Host)
    @ - Points to 63.81.134.23

    CNAMES (Host)
    www - Points to www.smugmug.com
    63.81.134.23 - Points to www.smugmug.com

Is there anything I need to do to fix this so as you navigate pages, it stays with www. xxxx .com domain format at all times instead of xxxx.smug.com?

    Thanks!<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p>

Your guestbook reverts to www.smugmug.com, and that usually means that you have hide owner set to yes. It should be set to no if you want to maintain your url and your look & feel.

Great, I changed it on that gallery - so if it changes back to the smugmug.com domain, then it's likely that the owner is set to yes? I will make sure all of my galleries have NO specified.

    Thank you!

All your links work great :) I went ahead and changed the links to be relative links. You can look in your header code box to see how I did that. They are now like the example given.

    Help Please
I have followed the instructions for the custom hostname via godaddy instructions but when it comes time for me to set it via smugmug i get this message.

That hostname doesn't resolve to SmugMug's CNAME (domains.smugmug.com). See our help section on custom hostnames.

I am not very good with this aspect of the computer, any help will be much appreciated..headscratch.gif

I checked your domain Kristina and it appears that you have 2 A records. Delete the one that is not 208.79.45.23

Also, I do not see a www CNAME pointed at domains.smugmug.com

You might want to check that. Set that up and then wait about an hour to try adding the domain to your control panel. If you are still having trouble, email me on the help desk. I will be happy to help.

    Staying on Custom Domain
It seems that when I browse my site (logged in, owner view) it will ultimately revert to xxxxx.smugmug .com instead of staying with my custom domain www.xxxxx .com - without logging in, it seems to stay under my custom domain.

However, I just noticed today when searching on google, all my listings show up as xxxxx.smugmug .com instead of my custom domain (which they did previously).

How can I fix this? Also, is it normal to revert to the xxxxx.smugmug .com when I am logged in? Seems like I can't always keep it on the custom domain.

Previously, I sent login to confirm details for cname, etc.

    Thanks-

Shouldn't happen this way. Please list out steps for us to try and reproduce? Thanks!
