PA waterfalls, iron furnace and railroad tunnel
We took a day and traveled about 1 1/2 hours south to see some rural waterfalls and surrounding sights. Our 'guide' has a passion for finding all of the waterfalls in NW-PA, and what an awesome journey we had.
Potter's Falls
an ice flower
Freedom Falls
don't know why but this reminded me of an old pipe organ. you can see the water drops on my lens - it was impossible to take this without getting wet!
these little ice pearls fascinated me. they formed from dripping water from the cliff above.
now i'm getting nervous walking on icy rocks with my camera, but it had a happy ending!
a view from the far side of Freedom Falls.
a rugged view above
another view from the far side of Freedom Falls. i hope to return this summer and hopefully swim!
Slightly downstream is an old Iron Furnace which we thought resembled a Mayan ruin.
I crawled inside and used a flash to see what the inside of the chimney looked like.
there were two stone channels leading up to it, which at one time were obviously connected to the stream below Freedom Falls.
down the road a mile is a rails to trails route that takes you into an old railroad tunnel about 1/2 mile through the mountain. Once inside, you can't see any light for awhile because the tunnel turns at the end.
we're starting our hike to the third waterfall, and we're pretty high up. below is the clarion river.
Gary and I are getting nervous because it's starting to get dark and we're still a good distance away from Alum Rock Falls!
Here it is after a long descent and rugged hike. This picture does NO justice to what is actually there. It's quite large. And the picture doesn't show a large plateau area. The streams around here were on solid rock, no soil and gravel - very neat to see.
We came out of the woods by moonlight - thank goodness it was nearly a full moon! It was quite a magical day.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Your old stomping grounds?! You had a nice 'backyard'. We really enjoyed the scenery in the area. Thanks for your comment.

Lucky for us we are only about 20 mins from Alum Rock and 30 mins or so from Freedom falls ( I plan on getting to Freedom falls and Potter falls this spring )
I was told by the guy who took us down to the falls that trips to Alum Rock in the summer is not recommended apparently it is very highly populated with Copper Heads
