I need some real lighting , but I hung a 60 watt bulb above her and this is what I got... nothing spectacular... its was just supposed to be a test for lighting... obviously by the clothes... sweatshirt..lol
Needs a catchlight You don't have a bad eye. The portrait lacks a catchlight in the eyes. This will put a lot more life in the picture.
Try something simple like reflecting light from a piece of white construction paper under her chin. There are obviously more sophisticated ways to do this but start with the concept.
If you like this kind of lighting, put her next to a window and use natural light. You'll see the large size of the catchlight in the eyes and get the idea.

Check out your wife's eyes in the second photo. See the reflection of your lights there? That's a catchlight.
Often, with out some light reflected in the eye, the model's eyes can look much less interesting, almost dead. The catchlight adds life and interest to the photo.
I'll try to post a link to a great post about retouching where there is some simple hints on how to add a catch light - as soon as i get on my laptop and not a school computer.
