I got the standard/ stock 18-55mm lens for my D40 Nikon. Wanting more zoom ability now. So spam me, what would you add for your next lens??

Depends on your needs. I think most go for a telephoto zoom like a 55-200mm VR IIRC.

If it was me, I'd go for an ultrawide instead. But again it really depends on what you are looking to shoot.

The 55-200 vr from nikon is a good choice.

Especially if you do not plan on carrying around too many lenses.
I own a 55-200mm vr afs 4.5, its a good lens for outdoor shooting. The vr works great.

If you want to get one thats faster,i'd go with the sigma, but it doesn't have vr.

Not wanting to carry around a lot of lenses. Hoping to meet my "basic" needs with another 1 or 2. My interests seem to lean towards people (kids mainly) and landscape/ natural type pictures. That is my reason for the need of zoom, sometimes the shot is still too far away for my 18-55mm

    Since you got 18-55 already,
    you should buy 70-300VR.
You will be fully covered and 70-300VR is very good quality lens.

I keep looking into the 70-300 on ebay and different on-line stores and most of them say not compatible with the d40 or d40x. Can you help me figure out where I can get one that is compatible? Or will it fit even though it is not mentioned in the features and specs.

    Thanks for any help.

(I do see a 55-200 on several of the sites, will this do the same? )

I'd 2nd/3rd the suggestion to consider the 70-300VRII... It'll be a great compliment to your existing lens; will work on your D40 as its an AF-s with in-lens AF motor and has good IQ.
