It's Official- Info for a Yank moving to Europe

Attention all Dgrinners!

My better half just recieved a permanent posting to Germany. Surprisingly, she wishes me to accompany her. This is nice, but leads to difficulties; some unimportant, like having to find a new job, others terribly crucial, like having to find a new source for my camera fix.

I have a question for Dgrinners living in Germany, and for the smugmug staff:

1. Is there something analagous to B&H in Europe? Where is the "go to" store for all things photographic?

2. If I order prints from Smugmug, can they be shipped to Europe?

3. Does Dgrin ever plan to do a European Shootout?

4. In general how is the pricing of photographic equipment in Europe as compared to the United States.

5. Are lederhosen mandatory. Can I wear them if they are not mandatory?

Manfr3d is the guy you need to talk to about Germany. Maybe he'll jump in here. In general, I think you will find the price of gear in Europe ranges from more expensive than in the US to insanely more expensive, though I have heard that the best deals are in Germany. If possible, plan your major purchases around the times you expect to visit the US.

    Hope you love it there.

    Cheers,

So many questions about the workshops and still nothing to announce? Far from it. We’re getting really close now to make everything official!

In the mean time, here are some details on what’s planned and where (and when)

In total we’re looking at 12 workshops in 2008:

4 in Tübingen, Germany [timing tbd] (TFTTF, English)
4 in the US during August (TFTTF, English)
2 in Tübingen, Germany in May and in the October time frame (Happy Shooting, German)
2 in Northeim, Germany in March and October (Happy Shooting, German)

The German-language Happy Shooting workshops are open for registration now, click here to find out more!

The Tips from the Top Floor workshops will be announced here in the blog and on the show as soon as we have everything sorted.
It is the purpose of life that each of us strives to become actually what he is potentially. We should be obsessed with stretching towards that goal through the world we inhabit.

Ahh excellent - Germany - I miss it. The advantage of Germany is that you can take a 2 hour trip in whatever direction and find some cool stuff to shoot. Fancy a quick trip to spain - no worries, Morocco - no worries and so on =).

I envy you. There is plenty of German Food and Beer ..

Lederhosen are usually optional .. however if you end up in Bavaria - likely a requirement during the month of October. =) ..

Ms. Justi has a job a the Big Ass Soap Factory in Ludwigshafen, which is on the Rhine. It's about an hour from The French Border. She speaks perfect German. I took 6 years of German, but that was a long time ago, and 4 of those years were in a Tennessee high school, so...

We really have no specific idea where we will live, but right now I am leaning towards Manheim. Heidelburg is too quaint, and Ludwigshafen is too industrial.

I will likely have to stay here until Ms. Justi's citizenship papers for the USA get approved, so probably until June or July.

So, does anybody know of a German B&H?

    Justi,
Congrats on the move! I know you're used to travelling, but I'd be jumping up and down if I knew all of those places were so close to me. You better keep posting on DGrin. thumb.gif

I can answer two of your questions...
    2. Yes, your smugmug prints can be shipped to Germany!! Scroll down to international shipping for more information

    3. Okay, so I can only half answer this one... DGrin has a Marc Muench workshop already set in motion in Scotland. Here ya go! I'd be totally chuffed if they do a shootout in Europe! I would have loved to go to the workshop, but I simply can't afford that right now.

I don't know of any centrally located store, but I've never been left out in the cold looking for camera stores. I've been through Frankfurt and even in run-down Leipzig, and never been let down for want of photo supplies.

For specialty stuff, why not still get stuff from B&H? I'm sure they'll ship overseas.
