Light, Science and Magic is great for basic principles and for product photography, but it is a bit scant on lighting people. For the basics of portrait photography, I like the book Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers by Christopher Grey. It will introuduce you to most of the major styles of portrait lighting as well as show many common light modifiers in practice.
