mailing "tubes"

I received my first order of photos in beautiful condition, mailed in a large hard sided "envelope". This last order came in a mailing "tube" and are, of course, all curled. All of my order have been 12 X 12 and I am wondering why this last order came in a tube instead of flat. I do not like the tube and I am wondering if these will flatten properly. I understand why they would have to mail very large prints in a tube but not the 12 X 12. Any suggestions on how I can flatten these besides putting a heavy book on them?
