LR Functions in disconnected state

Does anyone know of a resource that lists or details what you can (and can not) do in the various LR modules when disconnected? For instance, in Library who can add metadata, rankings, etc. since the catalog is local. Most, if not all functions are unavailable in Develop - they don't work on the preview, only the actual image (RAW) file, which I have stored on an external drive.

Hope that makes sense. I haven't been able to find anything in LR Help or the various Adobe LR knowldege base/forums.

In a nutshell, when you don't have the full rez images (just the thubnails), you all Develop settings are null. You could do ranking, sorting, add metadata etc but image processing, nope. Depending on the size of the thumbnails (you can control this), you can do draft printing (contact sheets).

What you really want to do while off line is just mess around with the metadata written to the LR database, not anything needing access to the actual Raw or rendered image data.

Just as I thought. Since I use a 15" MPB, I don't have my external drive always connected. I know I can bring in a collection to my local HD and work on it. But I was hoping if I had the 1:1 thumbs, I could do some 'down and dirty' review, like a 'quick look' at a grayscale version.

I just have to incorporate a shift in my workflow to bring images on/off the laptop to work on them. I've seen several different ideas in other posts. I just have to figure the best one for me. headscratch.gif

You could always have two different catalogs I guess "working" and "storage" then move items from working on the MacBook to storage on the external drive.

I also think that LR will support two drive usage but have not tried it myself.
