Galleries + Categories together forever

If this is already possible, please forgive the question, and let me know how to do the following:

Galleries and categories should coexist on the same page. It seems inefficient to place all galleries either in a category or sub-category. Here is an example:

Home Page
....Portraits
....Sports Photography
........Baseball
........Soccer

The most efficient way to display these photos is to have two thumbnails on the home page, one for portraits, and one for sports photography. Then on the sports photography page, two thumbnails, one for baseball, and one for soccer.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that there are two ways currently to organize these photos on smugmug:

Home Page
....Photography
........Portraits
........Sports Photography
............Baseball
............Soccer

And

Home Page
.... Portraits
........ Portraits
.... Sports Photography
........ Baseball
........ Soccer

Do any other users have this frustration?

In your help section, you state, "But we don't disorient your admirers with nested galleries (galleries within galleries) or too many subject tiers. A fair compromise?"

Shouldn't I have control over the organization of my categories? I think that to limit a user's ability to organize as he sees fit limites his creativity, and ends up hurting both your clients and their clients.

You DO have control of your category/subcategory structure.
Smugmug simply limits your nesting level to 2 (or to 3, if you count albums as one, too).
Other than that - it's all yours.

Not sure if this helps at all..rolleyes1.gif

    Nikolai,
It is very possible that it is I who does not have control over my galleries.
Let's start with a very simple question.

Can I put a gallery directly on the home page?

I Too am wrestling with this question...
I am new and just signed up for the Professional Level. I too am wrestling with how to set this up. I would like to have multiple subcategories within a single Category and sub-sub categories. Example:

    SPORTS (category)
    ----SOCCER (Subcategory)
    SOCCER CLUB NAME (Sub-Sub Category)
    Tournament A (etc)
    Tournament B
    ----OTHER SPORT
    PEOPLE
    ----CHILDREN
    EVAN
    CLAIRE

    etc..

How can I set this structure up?

    Thanks in advance

I'll add a slightly more complicated question:

Is it possible to make galleries, categories and sub-categories indistinguishable to the user?

I don't like how smugmug separates galleries from sub-categories (and labels them as such)

    In your home page:

    Settings: Organize galleries by Position
Auto-sort by: Most Recent | Position
    Display: Categories | Galleries

Select "Galleries". Your categories will be hidden, your used will only see galleries (as if cats/subs were not present at all).
Mind you, that would only be pretty if you have a handfull of albums.
Once you hit 15-20 you'd HAVE to have some sort of hierarchy..

With the existing structure you can't have more than 2 levels of nesting.

Thanks for this suggestion. It would not work well for event photography where galleries are organized by date within any given category. This would display all the dates for all the categories on one page...Not exactly organized.

Thank you very much for your help and suggestions. If one of the SM employees is available, I'd like to hear their thoughts on this matter.

    kindly,
