Losing Heart in my 50- 500mm

I use my 50-500 on my 400d and my 40d, I have it on the centre setting for auoto focus which I have been told to do. If I put my setting on the camera to ADEP, no problem it will fire. When I change it to AV which I always use it will not fire unless I am photograhing something about 30 yards away. It has got to be me so a big help is cryiong out.
