Was a tossup whether to put this here or in "Journeys," but all the interesting stuff is animals, so...

thought it would be fun to see who can guess where I went on vacation...ready? Here goes:

Well, they have egrets there...

and herons...

247730178_3biPb-L.jpg

247730299_ucibY-L.jpg

and alligators too...

247740911_eGoU3-L.jpg

So, must be Florida.

Then again...they have, er...

247744124_JzF2V-L.jpg

Rodents of Unusual Size!

And not all the birds are so familiar.

or are downright WEIRD...(there are two birds in the shot below; mother and, er, "child")

So, who can guess? Extra credit goes to who can identify not just the country, but the region as well!

I had fun taking these - I've not done bird shots before (taking while they are flying is HARD! I have a newfound respect for you guys that do). I know they aren't the epitome of sharpness, but I didn't have a tripod on the trip and they're all handheld (with VR). Hope you enjoyed.

I'm guessing you were on the Pantanal of Brazil.

Now here's another quiz: which photo shows a potoo, and which a chachalaca?

Right for both, Jeff. Potoos (several species) are in a different family than nightjars, but the families are closely related. This is best photo of them that I've seen. At night they make a very loud call that sounds like a cross between a owl hoot and a lonely puppy crying.

We have a winner! Pantanal of Brazil it is. Very good.

My (limited) knowledge of the birds after the rodent pic:

    #1: Tu-yuyu.
    #2: Gaviao belo
    #3: Dunno this one
    #4: Mutum
#5: Potoo (as mentioned in the thread).

Not sure whether a mutum and chacalaca are the same thing, but our guide was clear that #4 was a mutum. ne_nau.gif

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of how some of these turned out, considering the distance and my inexperience. I got many shots of that particular bird (most of which were quite blurry), as he kept flying up the river and we'd catch up to him again. I also got probably my only decent flight shot of the same bird:

Thanks! But I had a really good guide. Thing is, this bird is so well camouflaged that the guide rammed the boat into the bank 5 feet from them and it still took us a couple minutes to see them. Their proximity combined with the amount of time we had allowed me to lean back and put my lens hood between my knees to get a sharp shot. The whole time, the pair of them never moved. Well, almost never:

Thanks for the close up of this great photo of the adult with the juvenile in camo pose. Did you stay near this area and hear them call at night? Hard to describe, but it's a loud, descending, plaintive call like "HOOO, Hooo, ooo, ooo, ooo..." Some people mistakenly think this is the call of a sloth. Potoos are one of my favorite bird species.
