My hubby is building me a new 'puter! It will be up and running this evening. We both really wanted to try an iMac, but after getting a new 2nd monitor a few months ago and a new camera plus lenses a couple months ago, going with a home-built PC and getting to use his Intel employee discount for the processor seemed the financially-smarter way to go.

Here's what I got (I asked him to write this up as I really don't know about this stuff...just wanted to share!) :D

3.0 GHz Intel (R) Core 2 Duo Q6850
4 GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
Asus P5E-VM HDMI motherboard
Mirrored (RAID 1) Western Digital 320GB SATA2 drives
80 GB Seagate SATA2 drive (scratch drive)
20x DVD+RW SATA drive w/ LightScribe
Front Panel 7 in 1 card reader (USB 2.0)

Home grown is great too since you know you can upgrade an part of the machine w/o worrying about it turning to sludge in a year or so.

Don't forget to post your speed results here!

Congrats on your new machine! I'm sure it will feel like a banshee!

    Cheers,

Very nice setup. It will serve you just as well as any Mac would. :D

Looks like nice specs-- that processor will especially serve you well. Not sure about the HD's though-- I've started buying 750 GB drives and still fill them up rather quickly...

... but your mileage may vary.
