Q's about Kodak POTD

I am interested in entering a few of my photos in the Kodak POTD contest which seems so often to be graced by the work of dgrin members. If you wouldn't mind, those of you who have experience with KPOTD could you please give some advice to a n00b? For example - what types of photos are they looking for, how often should one enter, any other pearls of wisdom?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin K.

ps - I'd also be interested in learning what n00b stands for! I'm a newbie for sure, and the fact that I don't know this word probably means it applies to me :D

go and look at past kpotds, you can see them on their site. most anything goes! personally, out of the ten i've earned, it's been a mix of landscape, animals and people. i've submitted 16 photographs since january 2004, about one a month. pearls of wisdom? keep shooting, have fun, and don't expect to win. they get 30,000 entries a year, for 365 slots. so, the odds are slim. the reason i say don't expect to win, is that when you do win, it's such a surprise! for me, the 10th notification was just as exciting as the first :D

    KK,
n00b is an abreviation/shortening of newbie. Since you wrote that you are a newbie, then yes this word applies to you :D Don't worry, it's an affectionate term, unlike calling someone an Egret shooter :lol

On this KPOTD thing, I would just like to know of an easy way to write the story that they ask for. It gets kind of lengthy. I have asked people what they said, only one kind of answered me.

I would send more, haha, I haven't sent any in several months. I go up to their site with high hopes, send in the wrong photo (it never wins that is how I know it is the wrong one), and then I have to write a story about it, and why I want it to win, why it fits, etc.

Then I watch my mail, my spam, etc. I wouldn't mind any of that stuff, it is the story.

Now I know if you all were to give us a story, and we were all to send the same thing in with everything we send, that would not look good for anybody.

But does anyone have any suggestions??? On the story?

you didn't ask me. i'd have answered you straight away dear.

the editor asked me to re-write my story for the babe ruth pic that's running on 4/3/05...

    here's what i did:

flashback to october 2004 - it's game seven of baseball's american league championship series. even the karma of 60,000 yankee fans "rubbing the babe" for good luck could stop "the curse" from being reversed. boston won that game, and went on to the world series, where they finally "reversed the curse" that had been plaguing them since babe ruth was traded from boston to new york in 1920. here's to a new baseball season, and the start of a new "curse" :)

    ===========
so, how's this? let me know ...

    thanks

    Greetings Andy and Happy Spring!

I was just scheduling the Bambino for POTD on April 3.

Could you give a look at the story, and re-write it a bit
to a more "present" tense. i.e. "the curse that has afflicted..."
-to- "the curse that had afflicted...", etc.
    ............................................
    Title: Curse of the Bambino
    Story:
new york yankee fans reach out and touch the babe, as he travels throughout yankee stadium, in hopes of continuing "the curse" that has afflicted the boston red sox since 1920, when they sold babe ruth to the yankees...taken during game seven of the american league championship series, ny yankees vs. boston red sox, at yankee stadium on october 20, 2004. boston won the game and advances to the world series.

    Hope all is well!

Thanks, Andy for the amusing note from Kodak. They are not only difficult, they have humor writers (editors).

Actually, I think I am asking everyone for what they do with the darn stories. Sounds like you give them a very pertinent and complete story, Andy, exactly on subject.

Now, I will be really happy if someone can tell me a shortcut to the editors at Kodak. Maybe a two to three word story would be good.

Everyone and anyone, whether you ever won or not, chime in. I am trying to figure out how to spell plagiarize.......... however one spells it, I am game to do it.

    One of Damon's two:
This guy couldn't attend the Halloween party at school because he forgot to bring his permission slip. Major bummer.
    Mine:
At Larz Anderson Skating Rink in Brookline, MA, there is a separate rink just for little kids to learn how to skate. I sat on a low stone bench and spent a happy hour taking pictures of them on a late December afternoon.
I'm not the expert that Andy is, but my theory is that the stories should mostly be about how much fun it is to take pictures and share them. Or at least get people to feel that way. Actually, I think they look at the picture mostly and if they like it and hate the story they can interact as with Andy and Babe Ruth.
    If not now, when?

Thanks, I think you have a point there. Re "photography is fun". Kodak is nice.

They ask how does this fit the them, the theme might be wildlife, I might send an egret (we all have egrets), anyway it seems so dumb to say it fits wildlife because it is not in a zoo.

How does it fit the category of people? Huh?

They are just trying to give you ideas, not an assignment of points you have to cover. Forget it unless you have a point to make. Just fill in the blanks, something like:
It was a ____ afternoon and I was so ____ from ____. But I managed to get away and go take pictures, which always makes me feel great. So I took my camera to the ____. The ____ was/were great and I took this wonderful picture of ____. Life was good!

I just noticed that under his pelican Avatar (that is photo of self?), he has the quote for himself as "Bird Brain".

    I hadn't noticed that before.

My Egret Avatar, which I SHOT with my camera, I wish I had something as good as bird brain.

    How about fish eater.

Last year I got two KPOTD's, must of been pure luck or the lack of people entering. mwink.gifmwink.gifmwink.gif

My real goal was to get more than bowdown.gif Andy!:giggle (Imagine that):cry

I sent in four photos I think and got two on the big screen.

You can be sure of one thing if you get a KPOTD... it will be a grey
rainy day, they always are. And I had a crane parked in front of my
    first one.

Just pick one of your best photos and give it a try.

Uh-oh. :uhoh I stumbled across the Devil's Dictionary and they have a rather unpleasant description of a Chowderhead.
    chowderhead
    1. a head literally filled with chowder.
    2. any disgusting, white-haired, perverted homosexual embezzler on a pair of sticks.

    rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif

    Dictionary.com isn't much nicer, I'm afraid.
    chow·der·head Audio pronunciation of "chowderhead" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (choudr-hd)
    n. Slang
A person regarded as stupid; a dolt.
