Wickenburg had the yearly Gold Rush Days celebration this past weekend. The town is loaded with people.
This 400mm is going to take some getting used to. A steady hand is a must. These pics are barely cropped. I was as far away as I could be while still in on the rodeo grounds to get these shots.
All barrel racing was shot with my Canon 400mm f5.6. All others were taken with my 100-300.
Crash and burn. Brought to you by the good people at Budweiser.

LOVE the action of the first one!

Your barrel racing shots are the best ones of the bunch. Cropping in camera takes getting used to, but once you are no longer afraid to get in there I think you will find you yield as a whole much better shots, because you capture up close the action, faces and reaction of sports. You should try to do the same with the 100-300 as well. Nice job on some of the shots, I really like #1 and #2 and the other one that was posted in the paper.
Think of the shots that you see in SI, they are for the most part up close!! I know when I first started shooting I was so worried I was going to miss something, I can crop it down later right? But once I really started getting in there with my lens I found as a whole my pictures were better. Did i miss stuff, oh yeah, but you are going to miss stuff anyways with sports. So just something to keep in mind.
I wish we had roadeos out here. I love roadeos and I think it would be alot of fun to shoot em. So thanks so much for sharing!
These are nice shots, but like winger said, don't be afraid to use the 400mm up close. It looks like you go so far away you had to elevate and your shots are looking down. That vantage point is great for TV coverage, but not so with photographs. That's why you don't see photographers above the press box covering football games. If you can get up by the fence, and shoot up , you can get some good face shots of the rider and the bull, horse etc.
BTW, something I find funny is that many non photog types who see my pics tell me that I should be doing this for a living. They apparently lead a sheltered life and don't open a magazine very often.
I can only tell them that they need to see the work of the people I seek out for comments (all of you). I get a kick out of that because I look at my pics and know they could always be better. Everyone has their own level of excellence I guess.

Although there is a select few on these boards who are magazine cover worthy, most of us are decent karaoke singers.
It's been my experience that almost eveyr karaoke singer has a tin ear. I hope to never be a karaoke singer.

I sing a mean "good bye earl" after drinking!
I have only been on a handful of covers, but not SI or anything like that.
