See the world before its gone...

I always tell people I know to see the world before it's gone forever.

Sure enough a month after going to Seoul someone burned down the Sungnyemun (Namdaemun) gate. It had been the oldest wood-built structure remaining in Seoul. A taxi driver saw someone going to the second floor with a fire bundle and run away.

I wish I had taken a better picture but unfortunatley I was really sick at the time.

I'm happy I saw it before it was gone but sad that it's now gone forever.

I’m completely shocked! Have you heard weather or not they will rebuild it? Did they catch the arson who set the fire? Very unfortunate situation… Here is one of my captures of the gate taken in 2003… I have a few others, not on my site, I’ll have to take a look at them and see if I have a better shot than this one…

I was very sad to see the picture of it burning in the paper this morning. I am amazed how anything wooden and 600 years-old has survived this long. I wonder if they will rebuild... I know several structures in Japan have been rebuilt very close to the original. It will never be quite the same again, though. What a shame.

I remember the South Gate ... such a shame especially if it was intentially set. It is sad that you lost a national treasure.
