Troy, if this is the "better second time around" shot (which is so good it should be emblazened on the back of a US coin), then I can't wait to see the results of your "third time is a charm" shots.

    Hi Troy,

I know how you feel. Before moving down to Florida... pickins were pretty limited for decent bird pics. Rather difficult to make a drab brown sparrow look majestic. The birds down here are so flippin' unafraid of the camera compared to the way it was up north. Great shot and thanks for sharin'.
    Regards,

Troy, don't know what part of New York you live in, but I lived in New York for almost seven years and use to shoot up around Bear Mountain Bridge and had pretty good luck with the wildlife. The Appalachian Trail goes right through there so plenty of access to get out the animals.

I also did well in the Allegheny National Forest just south of Jamestown (mostly in Pennsylvania), the Adirondacks north of Albany, the Catskill Mountains (nw of Newburgh), and last, but not least, around the fingerlakes, especially around Seneca and Cayuga Lakes.

...and spring is the best time to hit them. thumb.gif

    Good shooting.

Troy, it's been almost 25 years since I left, but there were when I lived there. I lived right outside Newburgh at the time, not far from Washington's winter encampment back during the RW.

Sometimes you can get too involved with the wildlife. I was trying to shoot turtles in a pond right outside of Newburgh. I was laying in tall grass being very still waiting on the turtles to climb up on a log sticking out of the pond. Next thing I knew, I felt something brush against my chest (I was up on my elbows) and my worst fear was a snake so I must have gone six feet straight up in the air. I don't know who left the longer brown trail, me or that poor chipmunk who was just trying to find some shade.

Here is a link to where eagles have been spotted in NY during the last few years. Maybe it will help you find some. ...and yes, some have been spotted in the Newburgh, Highland Falls, West Point areas around the Hudson River north of Bear Mountain Bridge.
