Assign a new Position value to photos in gallery

Hi-
I've got a gallery with photos currently sorted by Date Taken, but it all goes to heck when I throw in a GIF, since it doesn't have that metadata. I don't want things to get scrambled if I switch the gallery to sort by Position now.
Is there any way to assign the photos Position to be what it is right now, so that I can switch to sort by Position, and then manuall move that one pesky GIF file?
(Make sense?)
Thanks-

The sort under there is an arrange snapshot and not sticky. Under
customize gallery make sure position is selected first.
At least I think that is how it works.:D

My assumptions:
- Each photo has a Position.
- Position is initially set to the order the photos were uploaded.
- Manually moving photos around adjusts the Position value.
- Position only matters when Sort by Position is set for the gallery.
I'd like to know if any of my assumptions are false.Based on these, I'm looking for a way to SET all of the photo Positions to the current be equal to their current positions, when the gallery is set to Sort by Date Taken.
(I'd almost like to express my thoughts in psuedo-code!)

I'm still hoping to hear from a SmugMug dev-type person about the particulars I'm asking about.
