Hood questions

I read about people no being big fans of the canon "screw in" hoods. Evidently, there are other brands of "slide on" hoods that people seem to enjoy more.

Can somebody point me to a brand of these other magical hoods? :)

Also, how do filters work with hoods? I'm assuming a screw in filter will work fine with the "slide on" hoods. Do they work with the "screw in" hoods? Is there another set of threads?

Thank you everybody for your help.

IMO the best hood for any lens is the dedicated hood from the lens manafacturer. It is designed to perform flawlessly on the lens, and should be of good quality. The only time I vary from the manafacturers hoods for my lenses is when shooting sports. I do use a semi hard rubber hood.

    Generic lens hoods.

Usually the filter attaches to the lens and then the hood attaches to the filter or slips over the filter so the filter is inside the lens. Some wide-angle or "slim" or extra-wide filters designed for w/a lenses do not have external threads or are wider in front and won't accommodate a hood.
