Strobist first results - opinions please?

After reading countless forums about strobist photography I took a light stand, flash unit, camera, tripod, reflector screen and two 500 watt flood lights outside last night and these are the best pics of the 83 I snapped.

I was trying for minimal side or front lighting, to just light up a little of the object with a little lit background and I think I got it.

What do you think, how could I do better - opinions please?

    Hi there,

Just a few thoughts... the first two seem a little off balanace to me. The BG is lit up on the left side of both of them and the right is just darkness. I can understand that you're going for side lighting, but I think I'd try a tighter crop. I generally try to ask myself what each part of the shot is providing, and if I don't have a good answer, then I cut it out.

The backgrounds are also a bit distracting in some of them, maybe try stopping down to a lower aperature to blur them a bit?

    Hope that helps!
