The losers

Hi Y'all,

One of my favorites to shoot at MI V and the rest of the year are our sandhill cranes. I'll always remember when my real estate agent took us to Herons Landing for our first look at the place around sevens years ago. While she drove us up Viera Blvd I looked out of the car's window and saw three sandhill cranes flying next to the car, keeping pace with us.

Unfortunately as our local development keeps running wild the sandhills are becoming big losers to our unrelenting need for more McDonalds, etc.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

We have to enjoy it while we can, and photograph what will be missed!
They are starting to find "dead zones" in the ocean along the pacific coast where all life just died from temperature change.

Great set of Sandhill cranes Harry!

After trying to capture some wading birds, both in flight and otherwise, this past weekend, I realize it may be a long time before I post anything here after seeing some of those on here. bowdown.gif

Thanks Glenn, I almost feel obligated to get out there a few times a week just to document what we have and what our future generations are losing.

You can send them my way if you run out of habitat! deal.gif

To be honest (I'm almost ashamed to say this), I never noticed a Sandhill Crane until last year. Now I've seen hundreds.

They tickle me with their clacking...once you have heard one you won't forget it or mistake it for something else.

    That last shot! thumb.gif

The one with them looking and clacking in opposite directions certainly has a "cool" factor.

Thanks Al, they will just keep developing this area until you can't tell it apart from the other areas of the country. At that point it will hit us that we moved here to get away from those areas.

They fly over my house very afternoon at sunset clacking away. Its really a beautiful sight. They are said to mate for life and you always see them in pairs.

They'll adapt, they always do. I sometimes see cranes in a marsh near my workplace...a man made marsh, about 100 acres in size. And it was completed about 1 1/2 years ago. Nature provided the small creek that runs through it, and carried the seed of plants, and the fish that laid eggs in it.

If you sometimes get upset about the infringement of humans in areas that were once wild, just remember two things:

-grass always grows through cracks in the pavement.
    -animals have no aesthetics. None.

Thanks Stephen, I fear that we will always look for the short term gain and never stop to consider the long range consequences.

Unfortunately, some birds (and animals) require specific habitats and specific plants, which require specific chemicals from the soil. Once those have been taken away though development, ...

Its kind of hard to adapt to a speeding car that runs you over. When your habitat is eliminated its also hard to adapt. We have too many species of wildlife on the endangered or threatened list to be cavalier about their status.

This isn't a game where you get a "do over". Once its lost its lost and we ain't gonna get it back again.
