Question about keywords

I've just added the keyword cloud to my home page and as I'm revising the keywords on my photos to get the cloud I want, I'm noticing some odd behavior.

Is there a list of special words that will never show up as keywords, no matter whether they are in qoutes or not?

I've read the gotchas in the documentation (http://www.twobythree.com/help/keywords-tags) and I understand that for some things I need to use quotes. I had tried to add the keyword "all" to all my photos, so there would be a way to get to all photos from the cloud. I added it without quotes and it didn't show up. Then I picked an image and put it in quotes instead, but it still doesn't show up. On the other hand I have the keyword "up" in quotes and it does show up, for the same image.

Obviously I could rename the keyword "allphotos" or something, but I like to know what's going on before I start trying to circumvent the system.

Any thoughts?

You are correct, you will need to enclose words smaller than four letters and numbers between double quotes. I see a few on your site already: http://www.twobythree.com/keyword/

Maybe it took a while for the information to refresh? If you need any help or if you need me to look any further for you, holler... :)

    Still wondering
    Thanks for your note, richW!

I guess I'm asking if anyone knows what the actual rules are for keywords. I don't think waiting for the site to update has made any difference, my tag cloud is the same as when I updated it last.

    Here is what I'm seeing:
    - Some words less than four letters are apparently fine. Here the keyword "red" shows up, and I didn't use quotes: http://www.twobythree.com/keyword/red#256357104
    - Some words less than four letters need quotes. Here the keyword "up" shows up, but only after I added quotes: http://www.twobythree.com/keyword/up#232907842
    - Some words less than four letters never show up, no matter what I do. On the same image, "all" (in quotes) is a keyword, but it doesn't show up: http://www.twobythree.com/keyword/up#232907842

So, anybody know what the actual rule is?

    Thanks,

    Piet

I just did a test on one of my galleries with "all" and "and". By themselves as keywords, even with quotes I couldn't get them to show as keywords. However, in context they could. For example "All of the kings horses" will show as will "horse and hound", if they're entered as phrases in quotes.

Were you using "all" as an example? Is there another descriptive three letter word that won't show when placed in quotes? Maybe the program recognizes that "all" by it's self is not helpful in finding a specific image like "all of us" or "all together". ne_nau.gif

Thanks for confirming what I saw, so I know I'm not crazy :), and for trying some alternatives. I'll do something like "all photos" instead. As was pointed out in another thread, there's really no universal standard for how keywords/tagging should work, so now how I have a better idea how it works in SmugMug.

    Thanks!
