Here is a review on several Gary Fong WhaleTail techniques
It compares different diffuser and flash configurations analyzing how the diffuser can be used.

    Interesting write-up.

The differences in lighting are are marginal to my untrained eye.

Would be nice to have a comparison with other products, light quality, price, ease of use (whale-tail seems a tad over-configurable to me), effect on recharge times, etc.

Anyway, I feel self concious enough with a Demb reflector / diffuser on the flash.. not sure I'd replace it with something that looks like a 'She-Pee' unless it did the job better. :D

    I bought a Chinese rip-off
I just received a Chinese eBay rip-off of the Gary Fong Whale Tail. It is well made, has all the bells and whistles of Fong's unit (and then some) and costs only a fraction of what Gary Fong charges.

I don't have any Fong shot images to compare it to but, there is absolutely no reason it does not work equally as well as the Whale Tail.

Of course, many folks resent buying from China. However, it may be shocking for American photographers to learn how many "Name Brand" accessories of all types are actually sub-contracted to manufacturers in China by the U.S. and European companies that market them.
