2nd Curtain Sync?

Can you still get a wheel blur using 2nd curtain sync? I am trying to show as much action, race cars, as possible and using the flash in the normal mode freezes the action too much.

I have very limited lighting available so a flash is almost a necessity. I don't have any examples to show, but most of you will know what I am talking about.

Yes you can still get the blur in second curtain as long as your SS is slow enough.

Thanks a lot. I kinda figured that but being a newbie I wanted to see if anyone had either tried it or new the answer. When you say a slow enough SS, how slow is slow?

I have a descent panning technique but I need to invest in a monopod so I can get some more "keepers". My steady hand isn't so steady, at least as it used to be.

This is what the effect I would like to go for, only not having to lose image quality with having to bump up the ISO so far.

What speed....not sure for auto racing....I have never delved into that. For a basketball player on a fast break 1/40 would be a good starting point. You may be able to get away with something quicker than that.
